Geography
‘Enabling learners to become geographers with a deep understanding of the world and their place in it’
How we teach Geography
EYFS
Nursery and reception focus on geography as part of their knowledge of the world learning. This is through themes included in direct teaching and continuous provision. The themes include: Observing the natural world, our school environment, local environments, maps, different areas of the world and seasons and change.
From Year 1 to Year 6
The Geography programme of study provided by the National Curriculum has been broken down to ensure both progression and coverage across Key Stage 1 and 2.
- Each year group will teach three Geography units across the year.
- For each unit, knowledge organisers are used which outline key knowledge, vocabulary and questions for the unit. These knowledge organisers will be shared with parents, presented in History & Geography books and used as a learning tool by the children.
- Lessons will be planned and sequenced across the unit to ensure a progression of skills and build on knowledge of geographical concepts taught in previous learning.
- Knowledge and vocabulary from previous learning is reviewed at the start of each lesson, supporting children to commit learning to their long-term memory. This can be whole-class or in books.
- Trips and visiting experts will be used throughout the year to enhance the learning experience.
How do we learn Geography?
We explore and investigate our local area to begin to develop a sense of place in the world.
In class, we use aerial photos, atlases and globes in class to locate the places we learn about and learn about the globe, the continents and the countries in the world.
We enrich our curriculum by providing children with opportunities to apply their geographical knowledge and skills in different and meaningful contexts. The children also create extended home learning projects that allow children to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
We engage in worldwide geographical events and learn in real time about the issues and problems that are being faced in the world around us.
We use the digital mapping to use and apply our geographical map skills and knowledge. This allows our geographical skills to be used across subjects, for example within history lessons where the children are learning about new places in the world.
Our Children:
Our high-quality teaching and learning enables our pupils to develop their ability to apply geographical knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts that enable them to:
- Confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences
- Deepen their understanding of physical and human processes and the interaction between them.
- Be able to use what they know in different contexts
- Build on prior learning
- Explore their own environment and make connections between their local surroundings and that of contrasting settlements
- Use maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans
- Communicate information in a variety of ways.
